Acidophilus and Bifidus is a common name given to probiotic supplements that contain both Lactobacillus acidophilus and one of the Bifidobacterium strains of good bacteria.

But briefly L acidophilus survives stomach acids and is proven to adhere to both urinary and vaginal surfaces. It produces many anti-microbial substances such as acidolin, acidolphilin, lactocidin and bacteriocin.

And Bifidobacterium also colonizes the human intestinal tract and the vagina and is a key indicator of intestinal good health.

They are both good probiotics to take so that a supplement that contains both is extra useful.

The Now brand of Acidophilus and Bifidus contains a guaranteed 8 billion bacteria through to expiration date (10 billion at time of manufacturer.)

This is made up of 4 billion L acidophilus, 3.2 billion B lactis and 0.8 B longum. It is very cheap - not sure if that is good or bad! Also contains potato starch, gelatin capsule, silica and magnesium stearate (vegetable source). If you're very sensitive to milk protein be aware that this product may contain trace amounts of casein.

It does NOT contain sugar, salt, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, egg, shellfish or preservatives.

Nature's Bounty Chewable ACIDOPHILUS with Bifidus is milk free and contains 1 billion cfu bacteria.

This product contains 0.99 billion cfu from acidophilus and 0.01 billion cfu from what they call Lactobacillus Bifidus which is an outdated term for species from the Bifidobacterium family. So with this one you get much more L acidophilus than Bifidobacterium. This may or may not be important to you.

Anyway, the consumers over at Buzzillions mostly like this supplement (when I last checked 12 said it was effective and 2 said it didn't work.)
