Oral Thrush Causes

Although usually not serious, oral thrush causes a lot of discomfort and worry to millions of people. There are a number of factors that are known to upset the balance between the bacteria and fungi in the mouth, and this imbalance is the cause of oral thrush (oral yeast infection, oral candidiasis.)

Ten major causes of mouth thrush

• The wearing of dentures- 50 to 69% of denture wearers will get oral thrush ie Candida-associated denture stomatitis, at some point

• Topical application of corticosteroids - this dramatically shifts the balance of microorganisms in favour of the yeast

• Corticosteroid inhalation

• Broad spectrum antibiotics

• Carbohydrate rich diet

• Iron deficiency

• Diabetes

• Oral injury or trauma

• Immune compromised people – decreased or defective T-cells

• Immunosuppressive therapy
