Align probiotic fights one of the most common antibiotic side effects - the dreaded antibiotic diarrhea.
Recently I had to undergo a course of antibiotics and I was not looking forward to the antibiotic diarrhea that was likely to result from it. It is one of the most common antibiotic side effects and has certainly struck me before.
However, I DIDN'T get it. Now, the experiences of one person is not a particularly valid scientific study, but for what it's worth, here's how I avoided it. I will most certainly do this again if I have to take antibiotics again.
I HAD been taking one capsule of Align each day (Bifidobacterium infantis 35624). Upon starting the antibiotics, I immediately increased that to 6 capsules a day - 2 with each meal (and ensuring that there was a gap of at least several hours after I had taken the antibiotics). If I had known in advance I was going to be put onto antibiotics I would have started the increased dosage of Align probiotics before starting the antibiotics for the best result.
At the same time, I increased the amount of yogurt that I ate each day.
A week later, I finished the antibiotics without having experienced diarrhea or any other gastrointestinal woes. However, the antibiotics had not shifted the infection I was taking them for and I was put onto another round of a different antibiotic! I kept taking the Align at the 6 capsules a day dose through another week of antibiotics. At that point, my infection was gone. I continued taking the 6 capsules a day for another few days and then gradually eased back to my one a day over the next week. I continued to eat extra yogurt throughout this time.
Do make sure that you leave a gap of several hours between taking Align and taking your antibiotics. Make no mistake the antibiotic is killing the good bacteria from the Align so you are stiving to help enough of those friendly bacteria survive to protect your digestive tract.
There are other probiotics with a history of helping with nasty antibiotic side effect but I had the Align Daily Probiotic on hand so was able to start immediately and it certainly worked a treat.
For me, Align was a real winner and it will be my number one choice if I'm ever prescribed antibiotics again.
